Finding My Roots: Embracing Stability as a Perfusionist

As the saying goes, "Home is where the heart is." For the past four months, I've embarked on a journey as a travel perfusionist, exploring a new hospital and work dynamic. Amidst the excitement of new adventures, I've come to a profound realization – I want stability, the comfort of familiar faces, and the depth of lasting connections. In essence, I've discovered that I thrive best when allowed to grow roots deeply in one place rather than traveling around.

For nearly four years, I dedicated myself to a hospital that became more than just a workplace; it became a second home. The bonds forged with fellow perfusionists, nurses, physician assistants, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and countless others were not merely professional connections but pillars of support and camaraderie. Every day was not just about fulfilling duties; it was about contributing to a community, where every individual played an integral role in the collective pursuit of excellence in patient care.

Leaving behind such a comforting environment was a difficult decision, one that was driven by the desire to expand my horizons. However, I have realized that what I truly craved was not novelty, but the comfort of familiarity, the warmth of belonging.

In the transient world of travel perfusionists, each assignment offers a glimpse into the unique dynamics of different healthcare settings. Yet, it also highlights the transient nature of relationships, where connections are fleeting, and the sense of belonging is ephemeral. While the opportunity to adapt to diverse clinical environments has undoubtedly enriched my professional skills, it has also underscored the importance of continuity and stability in fostering meaningful connections.

Working as a travel perfusionist has been an enriching experience, but it has also reaffirmed my preference for rootedness. Like a tree that finds strength in its deep-seated roots, I find fulfillment in cultivating enduring relationships and contributing to the growth of a single institution.

My journey as a travel perfusionist has been a valuable chapter in my career, one filled with learning opportunities and new experiences. It has also led me back to where my heart truly belongs – to a hospital where I can grow roots, flourish, and make a lasting impact. For me, stability is not just a preference; it is a foundation upon which meaningful connections are built, and professional fulfillment is achieved.
